AUA Workshop to Explore Intellectual Property, Working Conditions and Collaborative Actions for Writers and Literary Translators

YEREVAN–The American University of Armenia’s (AUA) College of Humanities and Social Sciences is organizing a two-day workshop on January 14-15, titled “Fair-Play and Collaboration: Intellectual Property, Working Conditions and Collaborative Actions for Writers and Literary Translators.”

The workshop has been developed in collaboration with Next Page Foundation, the National Publishers Association of Armenia and the Eastern Partnership Culture Program of the European. Organized in the framework of the Book Platform Project, it will provide practical knowledge on the various aspects of the rights of translators and writers, ranging from legal (copyrights, remuneration) to social ones (freedom of speech, working conditions, visibility). The workshop will also be conducted as students in the Translation Certificate program begin their Practicum.

“This workshop is very important to our newly established Translation Certificate Program and to its current students who will be involved in the organization of this event,” explains Dr. Shushan Avagyan, lecturer at AUA’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “Our students will have an opportunity to learn about the real working conditions of translators and their rights as translators in the Armenian and international book market.”

The event seeks to facilitate discussion and exchange within the Armenian literary community and with colleagues from the European Union as well as a platform for sharing national and international practices. It will involve prominent writers and translators such as Samvel Mkrtchyan, Viken Berberian, and Daniel Hahn who will share their experiences with students in the Translation Certificate program.

“Ultimately, the workshop aims to empower and motivate translators and writers, and help improve relations with publishers, agents, the government, and wider audiences,” says Avagyan.

The workshop is organized as part of the Translation Certificate Program at the American University of Armenia. It is open only to registered participants.

The Book Platform is a project of Next Page Foundation in cooperation with National Publishers Association (Armenia), Georgian Book Publishers Association (Georgia), Publishers Forum-Lviv (Ukraine). The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented in frames of the Eastern Partnership Culture programme in support of the role of culture in the region’s sustainable development and promotion of regional cooperation among public institutions, civil society, cultural and academic organisations in the Eastern Partnership region and with the European Union.
